Does It Snow In Dharamshala And McLeod Ganj?

An honest guide to snowfall chances, winter weather, and what to expect in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj.

If you are planning to visit Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj in winter, one question will definitely come to your mind: does it snow here?

The simple answer is yes, it can snow around Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, but it is not guaranteed. Also, Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj are not the same place. Dharamshala is the lower city side, while McLeod Ganj is the upper tourist side. From Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj is around 10 to 11 km away.

So when people ask about snowfall in Dharamshala, they usually mean McLeod Ganj, Naddi, Dharamkot, Bhagsu, or the upper side of Dharamshala.

Does It Snow In Dharamshala/McLeod Ganj?

In lower Dharamshala, proper snowfall is very rare now. In the past, Dharamshala used to get snow sometimes, but nowadays, lower Dharamshala mostly does not receive proper snowfall. If the winter season is very strong and the region gets heavy snow, then some upper parts may see snow, but the main Dharamshala city side usually does not.

McLeod Ganj has better chances than lower Dharamshala because it is at a higher altitude. But even in McLeod Ganj, snow is not regular like Manali or Kullu. Earlier, around 7 to 10 years ago, McLeod Ganj used to get better snow, but now snowfall has become less predictable.

Some years there is no proper snow. Some years there is only light snowfall for a few hours. And some years, when the winter is strong, McLeod Ganj gets good snow for one or two days.

Best Time To See Snow In Dharamshala And McLeod Ganj

The best time to see snow around Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj is usually from late December to January. This is the main winter period when snowfall chances are higher.

Sometimes snow can also happen in February, but if you are planning specially for snow, then late December to January is the better time.

But again, even during this time, snow is not guaranteed. You may get lucky, or you may only see cold weather, fog, rain, and snow-covered mountains from a distance.

Where Can You See Snow Around Dharamshala/McLeod Ganj?

If snow happens around Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, the better places to see it are usually Naddi, Dharamkot, upper Bhagsu, and the higher areas around McLeod Ganj.

Naddi is one of the better places because it is higher and more open. Even when McLeod Ganj does not get proper snow, Naddi can sometimes receive light snowfall. I have personally seen light snow in Naddi even when McLeod Ganj was not getting much snow.

Dharamkot and upper Bhagsu are also good places because they are higher than the main McLeod Ganj market. If there is a good snowfall spell, these areas can look really beautiful.

Triund and nearby higher peaks receive heavy snow, but these are trekking areas. During heavy snow, going there can be risky, so I personally feel it should be avoided unless you are properly prepared and local conditions are safe.

Is Snow Guaranteed In McLeod Ganj?

No, snow is not guaranteed in McLeod Ganj.

This is very important to understand. McLeod Ganj is not like Manali, where people go with a stronger expectation of snow. McLeod Ganj can get snow, but it depends completely on the season.

In some years, there is no proper snow. In some years, there is just light snow for a short time. And in some years, there is good snow for one or two days.

So if your only goal is guaranteed snow, McLeod Ganj may disappoint you. But if you want winter weather, cold air, fog, cafes, Tibetan culture, and mountain views, then McLeod Ganj is still beautiful in winter.

What Winter Feels Like In Dharamshala?

Winter in lower Dharamshala is colder than normal city life, but still more comfortable than McLeod Ganj, Naddi, Dharamkot, or Bhagsu.

During the day, if the sun is bright, lower Dharamshala can feel pleasant. But mornings and nights are cold. If it rains, then the cold increases a lot.

The best part of lower Dharamshala in winter is the foggy and slow feeling. Some days the city gets covered in fog, and it looks very beautiful and mysterious. Even without snowfall, winter gives Dharamshala a very different mood.

What Winter Feels Like In McLeod Ganj

McLeod Ganj feels much colder than lower Dharamshala in winter. The mornings and nights are really chilly, and if it rains, then it feels even colder.

On a sunny day, the afternoon can feel comfortable, but once the sun goes down, the cold comes back quickly. Naddi, Dharamkot, and Bhagsu can feel even colder than the main McLeod Ganj market.

But winter in McLeod Ganj has its own beauty. The streets are less crowded than summer, cafes feel warmer, the town feels slower, and sometimes fog takes over the whole area. You may see people sitting near coal fire, quiet streets, and a more peaceful side of McLeod Ganj.

Should You Visit Dharamshala Only For Snow?

No, I don't think you should visit Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj only for snow.

If your whole plan depends on snowfall, then you may get disappointed because snow is not guaranteed here. But if you are coming for winter mood, cold weather, fog, cafes, monasteries, Tibetan culture, mountain views, and slow travel, then it can be a beautiful experience.

Snow should be treated like a bonus. If it happens, amazing. If it does not happen, you can still enjoy the winter side of Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj .

Things To Keep In Mind During Snowfall

If you are coming to Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj in winter, carry proper warm clothes. Bring a heavy jacket, warm innerwear, gloves, socks, and good shoes.

Also carry a rain jacket or umbrella. In summer, rain may not bother you much, but in winter, rain can make you very uncomfortable. If your clothes get wet in cold weather, the whole day can become difficult.

Roads can become slippery during rain or snow, especially in upper areas like McLeod Ganj, Naddi, Dharamkot, and Bhagsu. Avoid risky bike rides and do not go towards trekking routes just because you want snow photos.

If there is heavy snowfall, check local updates before travelling to higher places.

Nearby Places With Better Snow Chances

If your main purpose is to see snow, then nearby higher places may give you better chances than McLeod Ganj.

Around Dharamshala/McLeod Ganj, you can try Naddi, Dharamkot, upper Bhagsu, and higher areas above McLeod Ganj. These places are closer and easier to reach.

Triund receives heavy snow, but because it is a trek, it is not easy or always safe during snowfall.

Bir Billing side, which is around 60 km from McLeod Ganj, can also receive more snowfall during a good winter spell. Rajgundha Valley, around 25 to 30 km from Bir, gets much heavier snowfall and can be a better option if your main goal is snow. But before going there, always check road conditions and weather.

For more guaranteed snow, places like Manali or Khajjiar can be better options depending on the season.

My Honest Take

My honest take is simple: yes, McLeod Ganj can get snow, but it is not guaranteed. Lower Dharamshala rarely gets proper snow now.

If you are coming only for snowfall, then Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj may not be the safest choice. But if you are coming for winter vibes, fog, cold air, cafes, quiet streets, Tibetan culture, and mountain views, then winter here can feel really beautiful.

For me, snowfall in McLeod Ganj is like a bonus. The place is already beautiful in winter. Snow makes it magical for one or two days, but even without snow, the cold mornings, foggy roads, warm cafes, and slower mountain life make Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj worth visiting.
